A survey covered by NPR on Tuesday revealed just how much many of us hate to floss.
The survey conducted by the ADA revealed that many adults would rather do these unpleasant chores than floss their teeth:Flossing or Taxes?
Eighteen percent would rather wash dishes. Fourteen percent would rather clean the toilet or wait in a long line. Nine percent would rather sit in gridlock traffic for an hour or do their taxes. Seven percent would rather be on a plane with small children crying or listen to fingernails on a chalkboard.
Really? Taxes??
On top of that, the survey showed that nearly a third of adults lie to their dentists about flossing. And we suspect that number is low, meaning that people even lie about lying about flossing.
So with all this negative publicity and aversion, how does flossing remain such an important part of dental health? If it’s such a hassle, why should we floss at all?
It is probably not a surprise to hear that people don’t like to floss. You’ll even hear Dr. Collins himself say that flossing is no fun. Yet you’ll also hear Dr. Collins say that he grins and bears it, that you should too, that flossing is worth it…
Why Flossing is a Must for Dental Health
Flossing is the simplest and most effective way to get the bacteria out of the pockets around your teeth. If you do not floss regularly, these bacteria will lead to gum disease, bone loss, and tooth loss.
Studies also show a correlation between gum disease and heart disease, so it is possible that making a healthy choice like flossing could lead to other healthy choices and could benefit your entire body’s well being.
Once you floss regularly, you’ll start to appreciate how good it feels to have a truly clean mouth. You won’t go back! You will save money down the road by preventing costly dental procedures like extractions, dental implants, and dentures.
Your teeth will also be whiter and less stained looking.
Not to mention, your significant other will appreciate your improved breath and brighter smile.

- Get a flosser with a handle (we like the Reach Access flosser): these make it easier to get all the way back to those molars.
- Don’t be a hero: start with every other day to establish the habit, then work up to every day. Once you get into the flow and start to feel the benefits of flossing, you’ll be hooked.
